In December of 2010, Actual Size LA hosted Vinyl Mandala an exhibition of original, artist-produced vinyl records. The collection curated by Justin Cole of OJO highlighted unique album-based work by Los Angeles artists: Akiko and Hashim Bharoocha, Alex Klein, Brian Roettinger, dublab & HIT+RUN, Eamon Ore-Giron, Julio Cesar Morales, Lucky Dragons, OJO and The Collapsible Mammals. For the opening reception, Actual Size hosted an evening of music related to the vinyl form. Hashim B. (dublab) and Ned Learner (KXLU) spun selections from the exhibited albums and beyond. There were in addition live performances by local music makers Lucky Dragons, OJO, and dublab drone dreamers Golden Hits.
For their performance, Golden Hits (dublab’s Jimmy Tamborello, Katie Byron, Nanny Cantaloupe, Ben Knight and frosty), created a tent installation housing a dream dj space with turntable-powered visuals by Alex Pelly. The environment shimmered into beautiful motion once the needle dropped on the Golden Hits master disc which revolved with a custom score of vinyl-mined soundscapes and textures. This landscape was crafted for lucid listeners so we now warmly invite you to listen up.
